Audience Quality vs Reach: Why Bigger Is Not Better in 2026

Instagram creators with high audience quality achieve up to 1.9× higher engagement than those with the most non-real followers.

Insights

  1. Clean micro-tier audiences yield much higher engagement

Micro-tier creators with a real people share of 70% or more have a median engagement rate of 1.32%, which is 1.9× higher than those in the Under 30% band. When choosing creators, looking at the real people share helps find those with stronger audience connection.

  2. Nano-tier engagement peaks in the high real-people band

Among nano-creators, the highest median engagement rate is 2.80% in the 60–70% real-people-share band. Brands selecting nano-creators can use this band to identify accounts with high engagement.

  3. Mid-tier creators see engagement gains with cleaner audiences

Mid-tier accounts with 70% or more real people share achieve a 0.80% median engagement rate, which is 1.5× higher than those with Under 30% real people. This helps brands choose mid-tier creators with better performance.

  4. Mid-tier engagement peaks in the sixty to seventy percent band

For mid-tier creators, the highest median engagement rate is 1.25% in the 60–70% real-people-share band. When evaluating mid-tier accounts, brands should look at specific quality bands rather than assuming the highest is best.

How to read these numbers

A percentile tells you how many creators you beat. If a creator is at p75, they beat 75% of creators like them — same platform, same audience size.

Low< p25

Below typical: under p25 for comparable creators.

Typicalp25 – p50

The normal range — between p25 and the median.

Good> p50

Above the median: better than half of comparable creators.

Great> p75

Top quartile: better than three in four comparable creators.

Elite> p90

Top decile: better than nine in ten comparable creators.

Read the median, not the average: a few outliers pull the average up.

How to read this chart

Find your row (real people share) and your column (audience size). The number where they meet is the median for that group: half of those creators do better, half do worse. Colour only makes it easier to scan — darker means higher. Hover a cell for the full spread: p25, p75, p90 and how many creators it's based on. A dashed cell is a hint, not a benchmark: it rests on fewer than 30 creators.

Methodology

Source
The IQFluence creator database of public Instagram, TikTok and YouTube profiles. All counts were taken in September 2026.
Population
Every figure is computed over the full population of matching creators, not a sample: active accounts (at least one post in the last 30 days) with 1,000 or more followers.
Metric
Engagement rate (ER) is the average number of likes and comments on a creator's recent posts divided by their follower count. Saves, shares and views are not counted. Real people share is the part of a creator's analysed followers that IQFluence's audience model counts as real people, as opposed to mass followers, suspicious accounts and other influencers. It is the Real people figure of a creator's audience report. Only sampled Instagram creators whose audience report splits the audience into types are included. Engagement excludes accounts with no measured engagement and accounts at 100% or more.
Tiers
Tiers are kept apart because engagement falls as follower counts grow; comparing them in one line would mix audience quality with audience size.
Statistics
Each tier is a random sample of up to 1,000 creators drawn across its follower range. A sampled creator's real people share comes from their audience report and places them in a band; the band's engagement percentiles are those of its sampled creators. Cells with fewer than 30 creators are marked as directional and left out of rankings and comparisons.
Reproducibility
Every number can be re-checked in IQFluence Discovery with the same platform, topic, follower range, activity and metric filters.

Frequently asked questions

Get clear answers to common questions about how real people share and follower counts relate to Instagram engagement rates, based on our analyzed dataset.

Among active nano-creators with 60–70% real people share, the median engagement rate is 2.80%. This group of 65 sampled creators shows the highest median engagement for nano-tier accounts. While those with 70% or more real people share have a median engagement rate of 3.13%, that cell contains only 16 creators and is considered directional.

A micro-influencer with 70% or more real people share has a median engagement rate of 1.32%, which is 1.9× higher than a creator in the Under 30% band. This highlights the substantial difference, as creators in the most inflated band drop to a median engagement rate of 0.71%.

Mid-tier creators with 70% or more real people share achieve a median engagement rate of 0.80%. This is 1.5× higher than the 0.55% median engagement rate recorded for mid-tier accounts with Under 30% real people share. When looking at the 60–70% band, the median engagement rate for these mid-tier accounts peaks at 1.25%.

This study analyzed 2,099 sampled Instagram active creators with an audience report measured in September 2026. The population consists of active creators who posted in the last 30 days and have at least 1,000 followers. This sample size provides robust insights across nano, micro, and mid-tier influencer categories.

No, the median engagement rate does not move one way across all bands, as shown by nano-creators whose median rate rises from 2.28% in the 30–40% band to 2.47% in the Under 30% band. A similar non-linear trend occurs among micro-creators, where the median rate rises from 0.74% to 0.79% between the 40–50% and 30–40% bands.

The highest median engagement rate for mid-tier creators is 1.25% in the 60–70% real-people-share band. This is higher than the 0.80% median engagement rate observed in the cleanest band of 70% or more real people share, illustrating that engagement does not always peak in the highest-share tier.
