When I left medicine, I had no idea what I actually wanted to do with my life. A traditional career, like being a doctor, gives you a clear path which you just follow. But once I stepped away from that, I kept asking myself the same question over and over. Then I found The Odyssey Plan 👀 It’s a simple exercise from Stanford’s Life Design Lab. You write out 3 possible versions of your life over the next 5 years: 1️⃣ Your current path: what happens if you keep going as you are 2️⃣ A completely different path: what you’d do if option 1 disappeared 3️⃣ The no-limits path: what you’d do if money and judgment didn’t matter Doing this exercise a few years ago genuinely changed my life. It helped me see options I didn’t know I had. Save this post and try it in your own time. If you're struggling to figure out what to do with your life, try the Odyssey Plan. It's an exercise that Stanford Business School uses to help people figure out their path. You ask yourself three questions: 1️⃣ Your current path: If you continued down your current path, what would your life look like 5 years from now? 2️⃣ Your alternative path: If you had to take a completely different path, what would your life look like 5 years from now? 3️⃣ Your radical path: If you took a completely different path but didn't care what anyone thought and weren't worried about money, what would your life look like? The idea isn't that you pick any one of these. By spending 20 minutes on this exercise, you'll learn something about yourself that I guarantee you haven't realised before. This method from Cal Newport helped me figure out what I wanted to do with my life. It's called values-centric lifestyle-based career planning. The idea is simple: work backwards from the lifestyle you want. A lot of us think "I did a degree in X, so my only options are A, B, or C." But actually, start by asking yourself what kind of life you want. 📅 What would your ideal week look like? 💸 What would you be doing if money were no object? Most people get meaning from work. It's just that you'd probably be doing work you enjoy. So what would that look like? Then based on that, figure out what kind of career would actually facilitate that lifestyle. This advice really resonated with me when I was in med school. 🔍 Start with the life you want, then figure out the career that gets you there.
