What an inspiring and uplifting 24 hours myself and @johnnyfdj just had. That might be a strange way to describe being in a country currently under attack but we got to be among the Ukrainian people in this time who showed that despite the hardships and the fear and uncertainty of what lies ahead, they are retaining their positivity and strength and even their humour at this time. I’ll never forget the women, men and children and cats and dogs we shared those hours with. I’ve always liked the people in Ukraine but now I feel a much deeper bond with them through a shared experience. People who sit on the sidelines write ‘why don’t you change your profile picture?! Why don’t you post ‘Slava Ukraina’ on your profile etc to show support etc. But those are meaningless tokens of support that don’t help in any practical way. Instead myself and Johnny did our part for the defence of Ukraine in our own tiny tiny tiny way which I won’t write about here because to do so would be insulting to the brave soldiers who are laying down their lives for their country. Nothing else to say except I wish the best for the people of Ukraine and believe that they will not only survive this but return stronger and more united than ever before.

The channel is about to reach half a billion views. A meaningless achievement in the grand scheme of things, especially when there’s a war in Ukraine right now but still. I will be long gone from YouTube before the channel hits a billion views so now is a good time to say thanks for watching. It’s been the greatest time of my life and has brought me untold experiences, friendships, knowledge and sprained ankles. And yes it’s fair to say I’m no longer bankrupt. Before harald encouraged me to start a channel I was doing a dead end job and never dreamed that one day I’d be exploring the depths of the former USSR as I had wanted to do since seeing the Berlin Wall get knocked down. Let that encourage you that it’s never too late to do what you’ve always dreamed of doing. I’ve managed to make some absolutely shite videos and a few good ones every now and then. Some of my favourites: 1.Solo in the Donbas 2. BAM Railway 3. Ladan with Sergei 4. Mauritania train 5. Albania bunkers 6. This country doesn’t exist 7. Moldova babushkas 8. Kolya first video 9. Belarus Chernobyl zone with babushka 10. Eastonia I was meant to be enjoying my retirement by now with a harem of babushkas from all the soviet republics and a midget following me around with a silver tray with a rolled up banknote and a pile of Peruvian good stuff but COVID has meant I’ve not finished the soviet adventures yet. So you’ll be stuck with me for another year I suppose until I can disappear into the sunset after completing my mission. 2021 A Year In Review… Well another year comes to an end… 🇦🇲We started off in Armenia where I tried to drive across that ancient land to report on the conflict in the south. I never made it that far but the film was one of the best of the year with spectacular scenery and interesting people. 🇪🇪Estonia was next where I had a great time. I was always fearful of the Baltic states because I thought nobody would speak Russian or there would be any soviet things left. I also thought people up there would be as cold and miserable as the winter weather. Estonia proved me very wrong and I fell in love with the country. I’ll definitely return to Estonia for a longer period one day. 🇺🇦Next was Ukraine where we had our first ever mosaic hunt and travelled along the front lines of the Donbas conflict. Amazing people were met on that journey 🇺🇿Then I was in Uzbekistan for a diarrhoea filed adventure to the Aral Sea. I liked Uzbekistan much more than I expected and see a bright tourism future for that nation and it’s ancient caravan towns of the Silk Road. I highly recommend the place but avoid the hotel Uzbekistan in the capital. Worst beds in the former USSR. 🇪🇹Then there was Ethiopia with the amigos. A fun but tough trip with the worst food I’ve ever come across on a journey. Glad I saw it but once was enough After a break we met @johnnyfdj and had a couple of fun adventures with him in the provinces of Ukraine which were great fun to make. I also teamed up with Alinchik for a video in Chernobyl which was fun. More of her next year… 🇷🇺Then the massive trans Siberia trip which was the most interesting journey I’ve ever made. To see the towns I’ve only seen on maps since childhood was one of the greatest experiences in my life. Met legends too. 🇱🇹Finally Lithuania with Johnny where we met the famous Gibbon and heard some stories. Enjoyed the trip a lot Next year I want to finish the Soviet countries ( 🇱🇻🇹🇯🇰🇿🇹🇲)so I can either move on with my life and do something else or if I continue with the channel, explore other regions of the world. Let’s see… I hope you all get closer to achieving your goals and dreams in 2022. Ben

Ukraine…land of friendly people, beautiful landscapes, incredible memories…what the fuck have they done to you. Hope everyone I met there over the last couple of years gets through this terrible time somehow 🇺🇦♥️
